Mission & Values

Mission

To sustain the hospitals, hospices and other ministries sponsored by the Society to further the care that the Sisters of St. Joseph established through their long and honoured history that maintains the healing mission of Jesus and to sponsor and support other initiatives that improve the health of the community within the Diocese of London.

Values

As a Catholic Health Care sponsor, we are purpose-driven with the following Catholic values providing the foundation to the work we do:

Human Dignity

All persons have an intrinsic dignity and worth that is independent of what any other person thinks or says about them.

Spirituality

Spirituality can be religious or non-religious and includes a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and often involves searching for meaning in life.

Social Justice

We advocate for vulnerable people, their families, and caregivers, as well as our employees, and provide leadership in serving vulnerable populations to help meet their health care needs.

Compassionate Care

People seek our care and services at moments of vulnerability, particularly at end-of-life. We must reach out with kindness, attentiveness and thoughtfulness

Respect for Life

We honor life from the point of conception to the moment of natural death and will not interfere with this cycle by shortening, compromising the quality of life or by destroying life.

Responsible Stewardship

Related to accountability, stewardship is delegated authority and responsibility for resources in our care, including the physical and financial resources as well as the time, effort, and commitment of employees and volunteers.

Our Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

The St. Joseph's Health Care Society is dedicated to providing a welcoming health care community. Rooted in our purpose, mission, and values, we are committed to provide sponsorship of Catholic health services as united in a healing mission to care for people with passion, justice, and humanity.

As central to our sponsorship responsibilities, we uphold a commitment that everyone who enters one of our Catholic health services sites feel welcome. We commit to cultivating Catholic health services that reflect the evolving diversity of staff, volunteers, and people served. We value and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion. We affirm the uniqueness of all individuals and believe that every person has the right to equal care and treatment. Together, we are strengthened by our diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences.

Faithful to Catholic social teaching, we are dedicated to the healing ministry of Jesus. We unite in a healing mission to care for people with compassion and humanity. We champion health services and working environments free from discriminatory and intimidating behaviour. We strive for meaningful action to continually address issues that include, but are not limited to, those marginalized by race, sex, age, physical ability, sexual orientation, gender, identity, neurodiversity, and socioeconomic status. In the spirit of reconciliation, we strive to develop and enhance relationships with Indigenous peoples.

Our Commitment to Indigenous Peoples

With great respect, we recognize that Catholic health services operate on the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples. We honour their spiritual and practical relationship to the land that have created and nurture a rich heritage for our learning and our life as Canadian communities. We acknowledge the current health disparities faced by Indigenous Peoples as a result of the oppressive legacy of colonialism and systemic racism. We recognize that we have an obligation to the process of Truth and Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and communities, and we are committed to the path of Truth and Reconciliation. We pledge to confront this dark chapter of history with honesty, humility, and compassion. We recognize that there is still much work to do by the Catholic Church and Catholic health services. We acknowledge the pain caused by the residential school system, including, collectively, our affiliation with residential schools. We recognize the steps we take must be authentic and thoughtful. We embrace the role we play in creating a respectful, inclusive, and equitable society, and Catholic health services approaches to care.
